real quick thing to add: its one thing if you wanna write kurahi with daddy kink or age play or whatever–its not my thing but u do u as long as its safe sane a nd consensual–but like. specifically forcing someone to fit into a childlike role in order to fulfill a stereotypical and unrealistic (and, arguably, offensive) sexual situation is kind of…
Yes, when choosing between the two, I always prefer feminine Kurama over childish Hiei. Not to say they can’t be done without those – plenty of fics, some doujins, and art exists that portrays them as neither of those things. But there is nothing wrong with being a feminine man, or a woman, and even twisting a character to be more of something isn’t the worst. Neither is necessarily making a character more innocent or young, but it does leave me a bit… more uneasy. If I have to choose between wailing maiden Kurama and literal child Hiei, I’d rather go for Kurama.
Some more tidbits under cut. Long, half formed thoughts regarding Doujinshi, sexual assault, and this whole uke/seme with regards to Hiei and Kurama, and which I prefer based on the fanworks available to us.
I would like to argue that there’s a TON of doujinshi of Kurama seme/Hiei uke without sexual assault.
It’s just that those aren’t the ones being translated.
Maya has a TON of doujinshi that’s been translated. She does shota.
Arina Toshimi has a TON of doujinshi that’s been translated. She does rape/noncon.
Even Katsuragi Shou has stuff that’s questionable: a lot of “frigid” Hiei being “coerced” into sex he ultimately enjoys, but also a lot of stuff that isn’t rapey at all. Fuji Shinichi has a “Two Chests” arc about Kurama and Hiei, in which Kurama falls in love with Hiei having seen him being raped as a child (???) but then a ton of stuff that’s just fine. Kame is noncon free (as far as I can remember), and Tsuta Hiroko too.
So ¯_(ツ)_/¯ this has MUCH less to do with some weird dynamic that Japanese doujinka are putting on Kurama and Hiei, and MUCH more to do with a discrepancy between what’s available in total and what ends up being accessible to a non-Japanese audience.
Of course not! I’m not saying all doujinshi are like this. But from what I’ve seen, the trend still stands. Even if there is only 1% of all doujinshi that is like this, it is way more skewed toward Hiei than Kurama, and from all the doujinshi I have seen translated it tends to happen worryingly often. Again, this isn’t saying anything negative about Hiei being a “uke” at all, nor is it a condemnation of Japanese fandom. Just an observation I’ve made. If this skewing is the fault of translation choice, then of course we can say the English speaking fandom is strange for choosing to focus so much on these works.
As for the examples, Kame doesn’t really have nsfw, (at least none I’ve ever seen?). Tsuta Hiroko has some questionable stuff, too, at least in my opinion. “Get Bigger” seems to imply Hiei is uncomfortable with anal, at least from how I’ve read it. Inequalities of Love is better, but there, too, Hiei pushes away, is forced down, yells a lot and protests, and while it isn’t all bad, in light of all the other ones, it sort of does follow a trend.
If you know of a few that aren’t like this that are RAW, let me know, maybe we can translate those to even out the numbers!

And again, this isn’t a condemnation, but an observation, and why I personally choose to prefer certain dynamics over others, when given the choice between this specific binary.

EDIT: Pls don’t take this conversation seriously… >_>; it’s just observations and a thought experiment about the two polar extremes. Just wanted to make that clear!
