Notes about the Japanese DJs

I wanted to make a few notes about the Doujinshi I’m uploading.

Many of these were drawn/written in the 90s and super early 2000s, art style and social sensibilities may reflect that.

Translations aren’t complete. Many will contain honorifics such as “san” and “chan.” If you need an explanation of those, they are readily available online or message me. This also means there are some pages left untranslated. If they’re unnecessary to the story and don’t have nice art, I’ll typically omit them altogether.

Also, many words are left untranslated. Some of the more important ones are:

Reikai- Spirit World /Ningenkai – Human world/ Makai – Demon World

Similarly,

Reiki is spirit energy, ningen are humans, youkai are demons, youki (notice the ki again) is demon energy, and since there is no “human energy,” there is no ningenki, but generally, kai will refer to the world/person, and ki to energy.

Attacks are also often left in Japanese. Hiei’s Darkness Flame, Yusuke’s spirit gun (Reigun, I believe?) and other such things are left untranslated as well. This may cause some confusion, but generally visual aids help with that.

If I had all the time in the world, better Japanese, and original RAWs, I would re-word everything, but as I do not, I can only give general guidelines for how these comics can be read. If you’re used to reading unofficial translations of manga or watching subbed anime, this may not surprise you, but many fans of YYH grew up on the English version only, and may be confused. Thus this note. If there is anything really confusing, even story-wise, I will try to add notes to individual posts.

Now onto the … sticky issue I want to raise. It’s a long one and about sexual assault, therefore I’m putting it under the cut.

As I mentioned earlier, translations are incomplete, and they are also often amateur translations, or the words, phrases, whole conversations even, hinge on words and expressions that don’t exist in English. As a bilingual (hopefully multilingual soon) person, I understand this, but many of you may not be aware.

This can mean that in some comics, if you see such things as a character saying “no” in a sexual encounter, they actually might be saying something else. Hence why I will label most of the comics that include this sort of situation as “dubious consent” rather than “non consenting,” because really, without the original RAWs and a proper translator, sometimes we really can’t tell if that’s what the creator intended for the characters to say. That goes for everything of course, but this is the biggest sticking point for me, because after reading so many of these translations, and looking at official translations, and living life as a bilingual person in general, I’ve learned to second-guess the words I hear and focus more on the context. And since sexual assault is such a tough subject, I want to be as careful as I can with it while still sharing these comics. I don’t want to label, say, a humorous R rated Kame comic as a “sexual assault” comic when I know, in context, that that’s not what’s happening with her work.

I’m not saying there isn’t actual sexual assault in these comics (there certainly is, and I will label it as such in each post.) But in some comics a translator might have put a “No,” when it shouldn’t have been there, or didn’t explain the context of the situation properly in the conversation that shows characters acting hostile toward each other. Many Kame comics, even Shou ones, fall into this category, where it can appear as if one (typically Hiei) character is refusing, to the point of physically attacking the other (typically Kurama or Yoko), but if you actually read the whole series, it’s clear character A and B get along just fine and that’s just the playful nature of their relationship. So please, take many of these with a grain of salt.

And if you’d rather avoid these things altogether, any comic that includes this sort of confusion and shows sexual actions will be labeled as dub-con, and you can skip past these.

Thanks for reading. Any concerns, please message me.

FYI I’m breaking up the comics into smaller bits.

More under cut:

tl:dr – comics split into bits, expect some random illustrations, new funding system for doujinshi on etsy.

Some have really long stories spanning multiple volumes spread among other stories and comics, some stories are incomplete, and some comics are just way long, over 100 pages. Tumblr and 100 pages doesn’t mix well, so if anything is over 5 pages and has natural breaks (like chapters, etc), they’ll be separated into part 1, 2, etc. If it’s relatively short, like Toshimi’s San, or they’re standalone stories, they’ll be posted as one or relatively soon after another.

I’m telling you Shou and Toshimi can get… ambitious. They have A line stories in comics, then B line stories inside that continue among multiple volumes. I think separating everything into bite-chunks rather than dumping everything will work best. Also, I will omit untranslated pages or “filler” pages, unless the artwork is really pretty, in which case either it’ll be included at the end or in a separate post as an “illustration” post (as I will soon do with Shou. She did many illustrations that seem to not have a coherent story attached to them.)

As of now, I have set up the queue that from 4 to 10 there should be at least one comic popping up.

And I also have a new way to fund the doujinshi hunt. Ta-da! Hiruseki stones!

And of course always there’s the donation page at https://www.paypal.me/lola1b

I have more than 50 comics ready for upload, all organized. A lot of Kurama x Hiei. So be prepared for that. Shou (also known as Tide and Real) and Toshimi did the most work, after all, and they were exclusively Kurahi fans.

Anyway, once I get through those, I will try to figure out a way to deal with the untranslated RAWs. I’ve got quite a few of those. So that’s the news! I’m also scouring the internet now for new doujinshi I haven’t seen uploaded before. I found a few, but funds are tight, so if you’d like to donate to help, please click here!
