The land… it is barren… it is naught but an infestation of Kurahi, it’s at our doorsteps!!!
I’m being dramatic but, I am not joking when I say I try to find variety. It’s just that there seems to be an overabundance of not just kurahi doujinshi, but kurahi scans and kurahi translations. There’s 2 Kurameshi doujinshi that are in queue for translations, and one I’m still editing, so expect those.
As for Doujinshi that don’t feature Kurama at all… well, there are very, very few. Most of them are not yet translated. It… doesn’t help that I’m a major Kurama fan so the doujinshi I spend my money on usually includes him, too, and he is mostly shipped with Hiei and Yusuke. The translators I work with also have their preferences, and so when choosing what to translate, they will pick their faves. (Two almost exclusively ship Kurahi, and some of the others have their favorites, too.) And the money issue is also a major factor. I don’t have a big budget for doujinshi (please donate or commission me or buy a hiruseki…) so when I have a choice between buying one I personally want and one that is for “variety,” I’ll go for the one I prefer. Just in my last batch, I found a Kuama x Botan, but I don’t ship that couple at all, so between that and the one that had Itsuki and Sensui in it, one of my more rare faves, I chose the latter. (Can’t say when that one will be up… sorry!)
There’s also some more Yuhaku coming. Toguro is up next, just needs to be edited, and after that I’m hoping to get Shishi and Yomi.
Otherwise, there’s a few raws of a rare ship here and there, but there are other issues, such as impossibly pixelated text that’s impossible to translate, bad art, short, or so generic that I’m not even sure if it’s for the ship or if it’s just friendship.
So, hopefully the Kurameshi ones will add some variety. Otherwise, I’ll keep looking. Another option is to just post raws, too, and hope people enjoying looking at the pictures, at least.
Is that something you guys wouldn’t mind? Posting raws before they’re translated, just to add some more variety, even if it’s not readable? Or posting lower quality works?
I haven’t actually! Not fully. I wrote about a few scenes here.
But I can add a few, that’s for sure. Pasting from what I wrote up there:
So, some favorite scenes that make me love these two as a couple.
First one is pretty light:
It’s during this scene when they’re arguing, and Hiei mentions that he just might escape and let them all die. Kurama’s “Hiei, don’t you even consider it” cracks me up each and every time. The fact that, so early on, Kurama’s relationship with this little murder hobo is so strong that not only can he make demands of him, but also looks a little… hurt? betrayed? by the idea that Hiei might leave him. I don’t know, this scene is literally what first made me ship them when I watched the show for the first time.
See, unlike the first two couples, the things that make me love these two are the small moments. Keiko and Yusuke are young teens, not really dating yet. Genkai and Toguro have this crazy, long ass drama going on.
But Kurama and Hiei? They’re just so comfortable together. Like a couple that’s been together for a long time, they exist next to each other, know when the other needs help, get excited for each other, and can do things that other people simply can’t.
Case in point:
This scene gets me every time. HIei is such a jerk, doesn’t want anyone to touch him, doesn’t even want to be there. And Kurama, instead of trying to appease him or argue, is just so done with his bullshit. He doesn’t even say a word, just plops the damn thing on him like whatever. Who can touch Hiei so casually? No one, No ONe! The way they speak to each other just screams that they’ve been at the very least, very good friends for a long time. In every interaction they have, they’re so intimate, teasing, analyzing each other. Ugh, I just love it.
And following what I said earlier, understanding being the key to a good relationship, these two just freakin’ scream understanding. When Hiei fights one of the Saint Beasts, it’s Kurama who freakin gives us a whole character analysis of Hiei. When Kurama first fights, Hiei flat out goddamn praises him as if he was his biggest fan, explaining how he fights and how he thinks. They just know each other so well. They don’t even need to use words to communicate half the goddamn time.
And lastly, one of my favorite scenes is actually one that doesn’t even have them interacting at all.
It’s this goddamn moment:
Hiei’s all huffy, like, “I’ll fight anyone” and Mukuro freakin’ looks at Kurama, and asks “anyone?” and she has this smirk on her face, and also, why are they so close to each other?? Like, it’s a big stadium. Kurama either found the one empty seat where these two hang out, or Hiei decided to go where Kurama was sitting. Also, Mukuro is just… she’s just staring at Kurama even in this screenshot. SHe KNOWS she KNOWS! When Hiei says he’ll fight anyone, you’d think she would ask if he’d fight her, or maybe she’d look at Yusuke, or maybe a shot of a bunch of Hiei’s friends. BU T NO SHE JUIST FINDS KURAMA SITTIN SI CLOSE BY AND STARES AT HIM SMIRKING
SHE KNOWS SOMETHING SHE DOES
More scenes I love, in no particular order.
From Two Shots, I love this moment
After fighting alongside Kurama, Hiei finally decides to ask for his name. He’s a lil jerk, saying he’ll try to remember it. We all know he does.
The teasing. Sure, Hiei gets teased a lot, but usually by Yusuke. Kurama not only teases, but also chastises him, as seen in the earlier scene
“Oh, Kurama caught me being a jerk… guess I’ll just go along with it…”
“Uhm… Kurama got hurt… I don’t care… I’m going to wait until Mukuro closes her eyes and FUCKING BOOK IT TO HIM.” Hiei, you baby.
This secret tryst…
LETS CONSPIRE TOGETHER KURAMA. And leave Yusuke out, sure. Pfff. Gotta go brag to your bf you got an invite, too, huh?
“Phfhfhf making fun of me for trusting you with Yukina’s Hiruseki … jerk! I’m gonna go pout now…” Yes, yes, Kurama has to be a lil shit, as usual. Hiei trusts him so much though, that he’d give him the stone to give to Yukina. More so than that…. I love that these two, just on their own, decided to go chat and say goodbye to each other in private!
Those are just a few. Hope my rambling was entertaining! Haha.
Well, I hesitate forcing a meaning on art, as everyone has their own interpretation. But personally, I read it as Hiei having some love for Kurama, though likely more platonic. He cared for Kurama, considered him a friend, but was rightfully hurt by the way Kurama was behaving.
So, in the end, while he grew to dislike Kurama, out of the respect he held for him, the care he once had for him, he chose to save him.
I’m not 100% sure what this is asking. I gave a warning that Kuwabara was portrayed in a very bad light.
tw: sexual assault talk below cut.
As for the meaning – well, I don’t think we can decide on a specific meaning for any work of art. It’s however you see it. The way I saw it, this person (who looked like Kuwabara, but come on, no way would he do such a thing) didn’t think what he was doing was that serious. He did talk about making him feel good and crap like that. So when Hiei started to cry, perhaps he realized he really hurt him.
real quick thing to add: its one thing if you wanna write kurahi with daddy kink or age play or whatever–its not my thing but u do u as long as its safe sane a nd consensual–but like. specifically forcing someone to fit into a childlike role in order to fulfill a stereotypical and unrealistic (and, arguably, offensive) sexual situation is kind of…
Yes, when choosing between the two, I always prefer feminine Kurama over childish Hiei. Not to say they can’t be done without those – plenty of fics, some doujins, and art exists that portrays them as neither of those things. But there is nothing wrong with being a feminine man, or a woman, and even twisting a character to be more of something isn’t the worst. Neither is necessarily making a character more innocent or young, but it does leave me a bit… more uneasy. If I have to choose between wailing maiden Kurama and literal child Hiei, I’d rather go for Kurama.
Some more tidbits under cut. Long, half formed thoughts regarding Doujinshi, sexual assault, and this whole uke/seme with regards to Hiei and Kurama, and which I prefer based on the fanworks available to us.
Since this blog posts doujinshi, I think it’d be wrong if I didn’t mention the Kurahi trends in those. Fanfiction seems to do this better, but the doujinshi… well, they’re quite full of dubious consent (and some right out sexual assault). Almost all of them focus on Hiei. Another reason perhaps, that I personally seem to favor, if I have to choose, bottom Kurama.
To reiterate, I do not think characters should be boxed in in either role, nor do I like Kurama bottoming or topping all the time, and neither do I think that penetrative sex is a must in nsfw media. There are plenty of ways to write these scenes and interactions without ever having to resort to such a dynamic. This conversation is more about if we are forced to choose one over the other.
And this can be perhaps a bit hypocritical of me, as I’ve stated I don’t like today’s fandom having reacting to past Kurama-feminization by going to the other extreme and refusing to let the poor boy have some dick, but again, this is more of a thought experiment on if we have to choose between the two uke/seme dynamics with the current fanworks we have.
So, that being said… Doujinshi…. Oh, my precious doujinshi. There’s definitely less Kurama uke, but there are some common threads. Yes, he’s always softer and gentler and more feminine in them, but out of all the ones I can remember off the top of my head, essentially all of them are consensual relationships between two people who are on a more or less equal level in physical maturity. I actually can’t think of any “romantic” doujinshi where Kurama is a victim of sexual assault or even finds himself in dubious consent situations.
Which is sorta the opposite of what Western fandom likes to do to him… but those fics >_> we all know are supposed to be like that. Whereas these doujinshi portray these dubious consent issues as romantic.
So, in Hiei’s case, there are numerous doujinshi where he is flat out assaulted, mostly by Yoko, but also by redhead Kurama. Arina Toshimi is famous for this. Her works range from sorta dubious, like “Costume Play,”
SFW picture, but the gist is that Kurama pulls Hiei into a bathroom, and while it seems its consensual, Hiei does seem a bit hesitant. That’s the most consensual Arina does, however… Her longest running work, The Cruelest Love in the World, while it does contain one of my favorite Arina panels – this one;
– Also contains a lot of forced sexual encounters. Even the one in the panel above is coerced; Hiei is drugged so that he is experiencing intense sexual desire, something Yoko Kurama did to him (the two are separated in some aspect and Yoko is quite evil), and Kurama, instead of finding a drug to help him or put him to sleep, essentially sleeps with him, knowing Hiei can’t really let himself say no in this position… and this is the “softest” of assaults Kurama commits in this series.
Even the more innocent “Kiss” from Arina, plays up Hiei’s innocence and is also predatory; Hiei doesn’t know what kissing is, doesn’t understand the romantic and sexual implications, and Kurama, knowing this, kisses him anyway. He even mentions that should Hiei find out what it means, he’d stop letting Kurama kiss him, implying that if Hiei did know it was a romantic/sexual action, he wouldn’t be comfortable with it.
Then there are ones where either Yoko or Kurama flat out assault him. (examples, 12 – in the second one, Kurama, the nice redheaded one we all know to be relatively kind, even admits Hiei will likely want to kill him for this.)
I’m actually having trouble remembering a single Doujinshi where Kurama tops Hiei where there isn’t some dubious consent. Even my favorite, Hiei’s Punishment Arc, has dubious consent. It took me multiple readings to finally come to a decision on where their relationship lies in that one (they are together, but Hiei doesn’t like how forward/needy Yoko is, and seems much less interested in sex than Kurama. So Kurama does all sort of shitty things to get Hiei to have more sex with him, from lying to him, entrapping him in a magical relationship that forces Hiei to return to him, and literally pushing him till Hiei just gives in – all very not cool things). And that’s the best example I can think of…
Whereas Kurama, while more feminine and “wailing maidenly,” always seems to consent and not be as violently upset as Hiei (Hiei often literally runs away, attacks Kurama, or at the very least verbally shows his dislike of what happened).
Kurama will occasionally weakly protest, as in this excerpt , or show surprise at the turn of events, but these protests are usually more of a “not now, not here, slow down, wait, this is sudden” sort of protests not “I don’t like it, I don’t want it, stop it, leave me alone, I’m going to kill you for it.” There is quite a big difference between the two.
Of course, as I said earlier, other fanworks do better. Not everything is doujinshi. But it is a trend found in the Japanese part of the fandom, at least. And, in my opinion, it is a possible consequence of portraying someone as innocent and younger than their partner.
So, as far as most of the Kurahi content out there that falls into these two categories, I prefer bottom Kurama. Of course, my preference would be if neither of these extremes were so prevalent, or if they were thrown out in favor of more nuanced explorations of these characters and their possible sex lives. But if forced to choose between those two extremes, I am more comfortable with Kurama being the wailing maiden.

EDIT: This isn’t to say dark works are always wrong (I enjoy a darkfic now and then >_>)! But to portray them as romantic is my issue. Wanted to make that clear.
Of course 🙂 We all have our preferences, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with any way we choose to ship. I hope people who like the examples I showed aren’t upset, either. It was just a perfect segway into talking about what I’ve been noticing in the fandom for a while, in the case of feminiziation and designation of uke/seme and the strict rules (sometimes even gender rules) that the labels sometimes force onto the characters.
Of course that’s valid 🙂 I wouldn’t get mad at someone’s preference! And I like some redhead Kurama topping Hiei sometimes, too. But I don’t like conflating “bottoming” with femininity. I don’t like Kurama on the bottom because he’s “feminine.” I think there’s a huge backlash against Kurama being on the bottom because early fandom, when the m/m fandom was still being born and we still had yaoi with lemons and limes, people would often characterize Kurama as too feminine, almost turning him into a woman, both in how he was portrayed in writing and in art.
But I feel like we’ve moved past that. At least, I and my personal circle mostly had. To me, things such as level of femininity or masculinity have nothing to do with the top/bottom dynamic, if there even is one. In early fandom especially, there was somewhat of a love/hate relationship with m/m in general, and “gay” relationships were just portrayed completely unrealistically, including sex.
This is actually a great chance to discuss something I’ve wanted to talk about for a while.
This is mostly speculation and my limited observations, so please don’t take any offense to it. Long winded informal discussion, rant, meta??? of yaoi, femininity, uke/seme, all that, below.
The way I saw early “yaoi” fandom, (mostly I see the term m/m being used more, though perhaps the “yaoi” term is still common in anime fandoms? I haven’t been in them in a while, so I can’t tell) a lot of people appeared to be uncomfortable with actual male on male relationships. As in, the “uke” (bottom) was always turned into essentially a woman who had a penis. Looking back, there were many shows, mangas, and fandom works that would deliberately exaggerate femininity and masculinity to achieve a more “traditional” male/female dynamic, but with two men. Case in point, with doujinshi (examples mostly from the late 90s);
Notice how exaggerated Hiei looks here, made taller, whereas Kurama is more slight, and his expressions are mostly innocent and soft. Even his eyelashes are ridiculously long.
He looks like a woman.
Other doujinshi where Kurama is “apparent bottom” follow the same cliche,
Kurama has long eyelashes, has soft features, etc. He’s not the same Kurama we know from the show. Alternatively, Hiei will get a similar treatment, either being portrayed as small and thin, feminine, or even childlike, (to portray youth and inexperience) to make him fit the pre-created role of the “uke.” Examples;
Look how incredibly thin he looks. Notice how his eyes are longer and pointed more at the corner (implying long eyelashes). Very few doujinkas draw these two as they actually are. Arina Toshimi comes close, and I adore this comic of hers specifically because she acknowledges that out of the two, Kurama is more feminine, but that doesn’t necessarily make him submissive nor does it force Hiei to become some macho man he is not (Kurama tops Hiei here, while wearing a wedding dress);
One doujinka captures them perfectly, and it is the woman who is responsible for creating their character designs for the show. I think her art is the perfect example of neither of them being forced into either role;
Notice that Kurama doesn’t have those extra feminine eyelashes we see in the first example. Hiei also isn’t made more childlike or more masculine. They’re not trying to fit a role here. They’re both themselves, and act like themselves.
This isn’t to say it’s wrong to portray characters as more this way or that way. It’s fandom, we can do whatever we want, and each interpretation is perfectly valid for you to enjoy. But I find that most interpretations, at least in the past, forced these characters into roles rather than letting them fall into them naturally. And this is why we have the whole overly girly, wailing maiden Kurama, and the sometimes way too macho, or way too innocent Hiei. Because often people use their appearances rather than personalities to decide who is a “top” and who is a “bottom.” Again, this isn’t wrong or a crime or a criticism, but an observation, and something I personally try to avoid.
I also am not fond of strict uke/seme dynamics. I don’t think it’s very realistic, and generally, I think most couples would experiment with the idea. Who does have strict top/bottom roles? Straight couples. Which leads me into…
Uke/Seme Roles Exist because of Heternomativity.
I think this was because women at the time were slowly rebelling against the standard dynamic of romance, but weren’t quite sure how to go about it. They didn’t actually want a man on man story (otherwise they’d be more into bara, wouldn’t they? Or want two masculine men, not one who is masculine and one who is feminine), but were aware going for a heterosexual love story would leave them with the same dynamic they’ve seen before and grew to dislike.
I know I first started thinking about gender and how I view romance because of yaoi. I preferred reading those mangas to straight romance stories because things weren’t assumed from the start. After all, when I was in middle school, it was a revolutionary thing to say that a girl can initiate the first kiss or be the one to ask for a first date. But when it’s two men, well, there is no assumption, is there?
Except that there actually was, and still is, in some cases. Because what actually happened with the genre of yaoi, at least when I was big into the scene some 5-10 years ago, was that we had the girl (uke) and guy (seme), and things were done the same exact way – the guy (seme) would pursue the girl (uke), be the one to be forward, be the one to try for a first kiss, and be the one to insert ***** into the girl’s (uke’s) ****.
In reality, no one is 100% a uke or seme. In gay couples, people will often just … go with whatever they feel like. Heck, even between men and women, where it is assumed women are “bottom” and men “top,” we can have women seize control, or even go as far as ——– (google “strap on”). So these rigid “uke/seme” roles just… seem outdated as of now.
And we also know these women didn’t want actual man on man action, because these men were almost always younger, teenagers even, one was almost always short and feminine, the other more masculine, and this dynamic would repeat itself over and over again. I can’t count the amount of yaoi shows and mangas I’ve seen where it was genuinely difficult to tell if the uke was a woman or a man.
But today we don’t really do that as much anymore. At least, I’ve mostly fallen away from that tradition. While we often will characterize someone as a top or a bottom, it isn’t always based on femininity or appearance, but more on how people act and their preferences.
When I gave my reasons for why I prefer Kurama bottoming, I didn’t focus on Kurama’s appearance, but rather on his personality. When I “ship” in general, I tend to switch things around, mess with personalities, etc. For example, Yusuke, in a lot of fiction, was portrayed topping. With Kurama, Kurama would be more feminine, and with Hiei, Hiei would be more innocent and less aggressive.
Example of Kurama being a pretty-faced “nagging girlfriend.”
Hiei, as more innocent.
In reality… let’s be real – at the very least in Hiei’s example, he wouldn’t act like that. But Yusuke is more “boyish” because he’s taller, has smaller eyes, and doesn’t wear that weird cloak/dress thing. And of course, between the two, Kurama is more likely to be seen as “the girl.”
Heck, it wasn’t that long ago that people would legitimately ask gay couples who the “girl” was in their relationship.
But nowadays I see a new trend in people foregoing these rigid rules. I see Hiei topping Yusuke, Kurama topping Hiei, Kurama topping both, both topping him (and other characters, too) – look, the point is, there’s a lot of variation. Meaning, people have stopped looking at appearances and choosing only based on that. We can have a feminine guy putting his **** into a street punk’s **** and not think it’s weird.
And unlike before, we can have two manly dudes going at it. We can have Hiei all muscled like he actually is taking it, or have Kurama have long pretty hair and have muscles, and be a total stud. We can have both. We can have “ukes” that are manly. We can have “semes” that are thin. We can have any combination, because the is no social rule that says “if you’re thinner than your partner, have less muscle, have longer hair, have prettier eyes, then you must take dick.”
And that’s sort of my point here.
I don’t like either extreme. I don’t like people portraying Kurama as a girl, and I don’t like people refusing to ever let anyone’s penis go near Kurama’s butt because he’s been too often characterized as a “uke.” I like people choosing based on how they think the character will act. But this is something that I’ve seen and been told at least three times since returning to the fandom – that someone didn’t like Kurama bottoming becauase of the past femininzation he was forced into, and that the extra feminization is cause for him to only be the bottom.
A lot of people go extremely in the other direction trying to make him more masculine than he is, or try to say he is not feminine. But he is. Kurama is feminine compared to the guys, in the traditional sense of the word at least. Of course, manly man can have long hair, but long hair is more associated with women. Roses, pink/purple uniform, longer eyelashes, being more soft-spoken – all things that can be considered traditionally feminine. And that’s okay. It’s okay for men to be feminine. I feel like nowadays, a lot of people have an instinctual reaction to a feminine character being portrayed as feminine because of past fandom issues. But I don’t feel that way. I think a character can be feminine or masculine, and have that not affect his sexual preferences, his strength, or anything of the sort.
So… super long winded, jambled mess… but my point is, let every guy feel a dick in his butt, regardless of their appearance. It’s great fun!
